Leith is Edinburgh's historic port and an area closely associated with the heavy industries that experienced decline for much of the 20th century. Somewhat overlooked was the fact that for almost 900 years Leith played a central role in Scottish history.
In the last 1990's the de-commissioned Royal Yacht Britannia opened as a visitor attraction in the port and placed Leith on the map as a visitor destination. This new facility created an appetite for the wider Leith area to be promoted as a visitor destination.
Streetwise were appointed to create a navigation system to encourage visitors to explore the area, but quickly concluded that the untold story of the area's heritage was a fantastic opportunity. Created by Streetwise in 2003, Discover Leith is a 16 point orientation system that helps visitors to navigate their way around the port, while also presenting a selection of informative and entertaining stories about the events, characters, buildings and industries that played a significant part in Leith's past.
The Discover Leith project has also helped to enhance civic pride. The system has helped give a taste of local history to a resident population that had probably not appreciated the significance of the heritage that surrounded them.
Like so many other towns and cities, the new face of Leith has defied some sceptics. The aspirations of the area have helped to reposition the area as a leisure destination and business location and have contributed further to the regeneration of the Port of Leith
