Streetwise Point the Way Ahead

19th April 2005
Edinburgh based Streetwise Orientation and Navigation Systems has landed one of the most prestigious UK sign industry awards for its Wayfinding Orientation System in Reading , Berkshire .

The award for ‘Wayfinding Scheme of the Year’ was presented to Neil Innes of Streetwise at the Sign Industry Awards 2005 held in Birmingham last week.

The awards recognise and celebrate excellence in signmaking and sign design, seeking to reward outstanding projects created during the course of the past year. This year’s awards attracted over 150 separate entries over 12 categories, with entries submitted from signage projects as far away as Kenya .

The winning entry from Streetwise – a comprehensive wayfinding system for Reading Town Centre found its way straight to the top! The scheme, which was commissioned by Reading Borough Council is based on a series of 19 strategically located orientation units, each of which uses a unique three-level mapping system devised by Streetwise. The maps are located on one side of each monolith while the interpretation on the reverse side tells the story of Reading .

The on-street orientation units are fully integrated with a free pocket map that is widely available throughout the town. The system provides further orientation on bus shelters throughout the town centre and for visitors arriving at car parks and the railway station.

The thoroughness of the project and the attention to detail were the points which won the judges over. Additionally, Streetwise received a commendation in the broader ‘Sign Design’ category.

Streetwise Director Peter McGrail said “We are absolutely delighted that Reading Explorer has been recognised by winning this prestigious award. The historic significance of Reading is often overlooked and the system helps to bring the town’s many attractions to the fore. Streetwise has developed a new approach to wayfinding, ensuring that visitors are provided with consistent and integrated information at every turn. Towns and cities are increasingly recognising the need to provide visitors with information that will help them use their time efficiently”.

Streetwise also designed the Edinburgh Navigator System, in operation since 2000, and also Discover Leith, launched in 2003.
