Although Edinburgh has a number of renowned landmarks, research revealed that visitors still found some difficulty finding their way around. Our review of existing visitor navigation illustrated a lack of clear and integrated signage. The solution was to develop an entirely new visitor orientation system – Edinburgh Navigator.
The very first system Streetwise created, we have now been awarded the project to develop it from its purely navigational content to include interpretive material.

At the same time the system is to be extended to new parts of the city and the exterior of all hardware is to be revamped to adopt one of the City’s recently introduced brand colours. This will be completed in 2009.

In addition we have added 14 on street and wall mounted visitor information panels at key car parks throughout the city centre.

A network of orientation units will present three levels of mapping and are integrated with compact pocket maps.
  • On-Street Navigation Units – The 32 on-street navigation posts feature three levels of information:
    • A local map giving the user details of points of interest, information sources, transport hubs and other facilities.
    • An interpretive area presenting an interesting story related to the local area. These use a mixture of contemporary and historical topics to give the visitor a feel for their surroundings.
    • A city centre map is displayed, showing major attractions and information access points.
  • Pocket Maps – A single pocket map, translated into five languages, complements the on-street navigation units. The map is available at a variety of visitor information points in the city. Like the navigation units, it provides a great deal of content in a user-friendly form that can be used independently from the on-street system. Around 500,000 are issued each year.
