Reading Explorer is an award winning pedestrian orientation and navigation system that helps visitors find their way around the town, while providing an insight into its fascinating past. The modern face of Reading has disguised its historic importance. Henry I founded Reading Abbey in 1121 and was buried here in 1136, while Elizabeth I was a regular visitor.
Today Reading attracts a large volume of shopping and business visitors. Reading Borough Council invited Streetwise to create an orientation solution that could raise awareness of all that the town had to offer.

  • On-street Orientation Units – The pedestrian navigation system is based upon three levels of mapping. The second side of each unit features interpretation of Reading’s notable buildings as well as events, industries and people that have helped shape the town.

The 19 information points encourage visitors to explore thoughout the town, each of the units also promoting an attraction in another part of Reading.
  • Orientation Panel in Car Parks – Visitors to the town are assisted on arrival by information panels prominently displayed in all car parks serving the town centre.
  • Bus Shelter Information – The on-street units are complemented by information panels displayed on 30 bus shelters throughout the town centre. Each of these bus shelters display a large scale town centre map.
  • Pocket Map – The Reading pocket map is distributed widely throughout the town. The map of the town centre is complemented with a flavour of the town’s history and explanation of the Reading Explorer system.

Reading rebrand leads to system enhancement

As part of recent rebranding for the town, Streetwise has recently been appointed to refresh Reading Explorer’s graphics to adopt the essence of the new branding. In addition there will be an expansion of the system’s network to new districts of the town. This work will be completed in June 2009.
